Throw a Super Bowl LIII Party!

There are 5 key ingredients to any successful Super Bowl watch party – Food. Drinks. Seating. TV. Decorations. If you are planning on throwing a watch party for Super Bowl LIII, it is easy to make it a success, as long as you cover the basics.

The Food!

Everyone who has ever hosted a party can tell you, the most important thing is the food you provide. Lucky for you, Palio’s pizza pairs perfectly with football games. So, if you are having a group of people over to watch the game, make sure you have plenty of Palio’s on hand to feed them all. We’d also recommend having some snacks: chips, pretzels, and candy on hand too!

The Drinks!

For everyone 21 and over, beer is a clear staple when watching football. It is great to have other drinks on hand, though. Try a signature cocktail or alcoholic punch for those that don’t like beer and maybe alcohol-free lemonade and sodas for those that don’t drink at all. Don’t worry about the presentation on drinks, just make sure they are cool and there is plenty of ice to last the length of the game.

The Seating!

You want to make sure you have enough space to accommodate the number of guests you’ve invited. Depending on the size, not everyone may be seated at the same time, but you want to make sure you have options for them. Having a few extra throw pillows on hand to serve as seating is an easy way to avoid making someone feel like they have to stand.

The Television!

Size may not matter a whole lot, but it does help to have a screen big enough for everyone to view. If the purpose of the gathering is to watch the game, you want to make sure everyone can see the action. This may require you to reposition your TV from its normal spot. Before the party starts, just think about every angle where people will be and decide where is best to place the TV.

The Decorations!

While they are not needed for every watch party, the Super Bowl could use with a little sports and team-themed decorations. Try including colors and stuff from both teams, especially if those coming to the party may be rooting for opposing teams. It is always fun to play up the rivalries.

While there are no real rules for hosting a Super Bowl watch party, these 5 things are pretty essential to everyone in attendance having fun. Most importantly, these are all easy things to throw together. You can stick to the basics of each of these 5 things and have a great time or you can also go all out on providing these 5 things and really elevate your party. Keep in mind who your guests are and what they’ll expect and you should have an overall amazing time!

Where Did Pizza Come From?!

Most people believe that Italians invented pizza, but the delicious baked bread with toppings is seen in many other cuisines. The history of pizza – in the style we are most familiar with today – is often attributed to Naples, Italy. Although, similar dishes can be traced back to a few other locations. Pissaladière from Provence, coca from Catalan, and lahma bi ajeen from the Middle East are all very similar to what we identify as pizza.

The classic pizza, open-faced dough with tomato sauce and mozzarella cheese was first brought to attention by Raffaele Esposito in Naples in 1889. He created the dish to honor King Umberto and Queen Margherita’s visit using colors of the Italian flag, green, red, and white – basil, tomatoes, and mozzarella! This is where the name for the Margherita pizza comes from! At least, that is what the rumor says!

Here in the states, Italian immigrants sold pizza in their stores with the first ever pizzeria opening in 1905 in New York City! It wasn’t until after World War II in 1945 that pizza really caught on stateside, though. Many of the soldiers stationed in Italy tasted pizza and brought the love of the pizza pie home with them!

Spaghetti Crops in Switzerland – A 1957 Prank

You would think that no one would believe that spaghetti grew on a tree, but you would be wrong!

In 1957, the BBC fooled the nation on April Fool’s Day when they broadcast a story about spaghetti crops in Switzerland!

The segment was aired on Panorama, a regular news program on the BBC. It featured a family in Switzerland as they harvested the spaghetti from trees after a mild winter. The show contained footage of a woman carefully removing stands of spaghetti from a tree and laying them in the sun to dry.

The host of the program explained that each year the end of March spaghetti harvesters all over Europe are nervous as severe frost can impair the flavor of the spaghetti. The fun and absurdity didn’t stop there, as he also claimed that spaghetti always grows to the same length thanks to years of hard work by generations of growers.

The April Fool’s Day joke was seen by around 8 million viewers! While the majority enjoyed the joke, some did not! The following day, the BBC received phone calls from people inquiring about where to buy their own spaghetti tree and from people criticizing the network for airing the segment during a program that is meant to cover real news.

It is important to note that spaghetti was not a common dish in the UK in the 1950s. In fact, spaghetti was considered an exotic delicacy.

Lucky for you, spaghetti is very popular here in America and you can get a delicious plate of it at your local Palio’s!

Disclaimer: Our spaghetti is NOT GROWN ON TREES! 😉

Tips and Tricks for Safe Trick-or-Treating!

At Palio’s, family is important to us! That is why we have compiled a list of tips to help keep your little ghosts, goblins, pirates, and princesses safe this Halloween!

Halloween is a fun and festive time a year for children and adults of all ages. Because of the wide range of ages who celebrate and the varying ways they show their enthusiasm for all things spooky, safety is a big concern. You want to take every precaution you can to ensure you and your family have a safe and happy Halloween.

-Go During Safe Hours!
It is okay to go a little before dark! When you go Trick or Treating at dusk, there will still be plenty of light to help you see your kids and the other trick or treaters!

-Be Seen!
Make sure your child’s costume is brightly colored and/or has reflective tape used on it. Another great tip is to use some sort of glow-in-the-dark paint on their candy bag.

-Go in Groups!
Let your kids go with a small group of children. As the old adage goes, there is safety in numbers. Make a fun night of it with friends!

-Provide Adult Supervision!
We know that your kid – depending on age – may complain about this, but make sure your kids and their friends have adult supervision.

-Bring Flashlights!
It is important to bring flashlights to help light the paths and inspect the candy. If you have one for each child, it is preferred, but at least make sure any chaperone has one.

-Stick to Known Neighborhoods!
It is best to stick to houses and neighborhoods you know. If you have to venture to unknown areas, look for neighborhoods where families live.

We hope these tips help prepare you and your little ones for a wonderful Halloween! Before you head out trick-or-treating, bring the kids in for a delicious dinner and Palio’s!

What’s Your Favorite Pizza Topping?

There are so many pizza toppings to choose between! A few of the more commonly seen are:

Pepperoni, Beef, Sausage, Ham, Chicken, Italian Sausage, Bacon, Meatballs, Anchovies, Spinach, Fresh Mushrooms, Red Onions, Black Olives, Green Olives, Roma Tomatoes, Artichoke Hearts, Fresh Basil, Bell Peppers, Fresh Garlic, Cranberries, Jalapeños, Cashews, Cheddar Cheese, Mozzarella Cheese, Feta Cheese, and even Pineapple!

While this list seems like a lot to choose between, there are even more toppings out there that people like to include on their pizzas! We prefer to stick to the more traditional ones, though!

Utilizing these toppings, you can create a different flavor of pizza for every day of the week!

Something sweet? Try combining ham, cranberries, and pineapple.

Something spicy? Put beef, jalapeños, and red onions on your pizza.

Something special? You can always add chicken, tomatoes, garlic, and cashews for an interesting taste!

Whatever you are in the mood for, don’t be afraid to ask! Mix and match your flavors and create a pizza that is all your own!
